Adeyemi College graduates 12,628, confers award on Ondo Gov's wife, 9 others.
The Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife and Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo have awarded degrees and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) to 12,628 students, who completed their studies during the 2012 / 2013, 2014 / 2015, 2015 / 2016 and 2016/ 2017 academic sessions in the institution.
The graduands who were drawn from all the five schools in the College, namely School of Languages, Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Education as well as Vocational and Technical Education, also included others who did Post Graduate diploma in Education, Part-Time Studies and NCE Sandwich programmes in the College.
Addressing the graduands, the Federal Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, represented by the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Prof. Bappa- Aliyu Muhammadu congratulated the Governing Council, Management, staff and students of the institution for hosting the event.
He described ACE as one of the leading institution of higher learning, that has made advancement in the fulfillment of its mandate of producing quality teachers and conducting research activities that has added value to teaching at all levels of Education in Nigeria.
The Minister also lauded the institution saying, "Adeyemi College of Education has been a pioneer in the Nig+erian educational system and has continued to live up to its billing since its establishment."//
While noting the various achievements recorded in the College in the last five years, the Education Minister expressed satisfaction especially for the status it has earned as " number one among Colleges of Education in Nigeria in the Webometric ranking of 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Mallam Adamu Adamu also commended the college for the feat recorded in the area of prudent management of resources and advancement in Information Communication Technology ( ICT), which culminated in the establishment of electronic libraries, setting up of video / audio media teaching facilities and the introduction of the Electronic Document Management System in the institution.
He reiterated the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration to improving the standard of Education through introduction of policies which has led to improvement in the quality" of our educational institutions while also increasing access".
The Minister congratulated the outgoing Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, for his achievements in office and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Also in his speech, the Vice-chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede commended the Management of the College for effective administration saying the step has helped the institution in achieving its goal of pursuing excellence and greatness.
He said: "I wish to unequivocally state that the claim that Adeyemi College of Education is the "foremost Teacher Training institution in Nigeria is not an idle one. Professor Ogen, through his resourcefulness and progressive thinking, has no doubt launched the College on the right path to achieving this feat".
Prof. Ogunbodede felicitated with the graduands saying having successfully completed their studies at the College, they have been" adjudged worthy in learning and character to receive the degrees and diplomas of Obafemi Awolowo University.
He advised the graduating students to remain good ambassadors of their alma mater and take charge of their future saying '' I have no doubt that your intelligence, inspiration, ambition and the training you have received here, you have what it takes to make your future a huge success.
Similarly, in his address on the occasion, the Chairman, Governing Council, Adeyemi College of Education Ondo, Prof. Nathaniel Chukwu Ohazurike, described the occasion as remarkable.
He also described the College as a pace setter and centre of excellence in service delivery not only to its host community but Nigeria at large.
The Governing Council chair reiterated his determination to continue to provide the right leadership that would take the College to higher level.
Prof. Ohazurike congratulated the outgoing Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen for hardworking and dedication to duty. He also felicitated with members of the institution's Academic Board, staff and students and Alumni association and thanked them for their cooperation and support.
Also in his address, the outgoing Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, described the institution as one of the best in the country and highlighted some of the greatest achievements of his administration since he took over the affairs of the College in year 2014.
He listed them to include launching of ACE Information Technology Revolution, which culminated in the introduction of electronic voting, EDMS and digitisation, ACE TV based on fibre optic, ACE Online Radio also based on fibre optic as well as Digital Security and acquisition of drone.
Other achievements were the stabilisation of the academic calendar, engaging in International partnership and outreach which resulted in the College receiving a gift of a $12,000 for professional Counsellors course from Indiana University, USA.
Prof. Ogen also mentioned other achievements to include the floating of an academic Press, which is the first of its kind in any College of Education in Nigeria, the introduction of graduate fellowship scheme and the ACE student loan scheme among others.
On the well-being of the students, the outgoing College Administrator said opportunities were given to students to attend local and international conferences during his tenure, while other student-oriented initiatives also introduced by his administration include Students' Welfare and Compensation ( STUWECO) scheme, " an insurance program to compensate eventualities amongst students of the College."
Prof. Ogen also spoke on other achievements which includes propriety and financial prudence, accreditation of programmes and human capacity development, physical structures / projects constructed in the institution as well as the efforts made by his administration towards the actualisation of the upgrade of the College to a University of Education.
The outgoing Provost also spoke on recognitions, awards and commendations received by the College during his tenure. He listed the awards to include West Africa's Most Trusted Quality College of Education for 2018", The Most Innovative and Best College of Education in Nigeria for 2017 as well as the " Most Outstanding College of Education in the Southwest to mention but a few.
Meanwhile 10 eminent personalities including the wife of the Ondo State Governor, Her Excellency, Chief Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, were conferred with award as part of the activities marking the 34th convocation ceremony in the institution.
While Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu received the Fellowship award of the College for Gender Development and Community Health, other personalities like the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund ( TETFUND), Dr. Bichi Baffa, was given the Fellowship award for Tertiary Educational Development and Administration.
Other recipients were Prof. Toyin Falola, who got the Fellowship award for Global Educational Development and Cultural Upliftment as well as Prof. Victor Mbarika, who got the Fellowship award for Educational Development, ICT and Community Service.
Similarly, six other important dignitaries including the Olugbo of Ugbo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Frederick Akinruntan Obateru was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award for exemplary Philanthropy and Development of the College.
Others who also received similar award for significant contributions to the development of the institution were High Chief ( Sir) Olabanji Akingbule; Prof. Shaison Ouseph Anthony from India; Ondo Development Committee ( ODC) as well as the late legal luminary and Human Rights Activist and an alumnus of the College, Barrister Bamidele Aturu and immediate past Chairman ODC, Otunba Noah Fadayomi who were both conferred with post humous award.
The well attended ceremony, which held at the College quadrangle and which witnessed the presence of eminent personalities from all walks of life, including principal officers of the college, Deans and Directors, Heads of Department and Units climaxed with the presentation of prizes and awards to outstanding students.
