Adeyemi college female staff association tasks on college dev.

Members of the Adeyemi College of Education Ondo Female Staff Association (ACEFSA), have been advised to make positive contributions to the development of the institution.

This advice was given by the Provost of the College, Dr. Samuel Akintunde while speaking at the event marking the celebration of the 2019 International Women's Day, which held in the institution on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.

It would be recalled that the International Women's Day celebration for year 2019 was held across the world on 8th March, 2019. The annual celebration began in year 1911 when it was marked in several countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

The theme for this year's celebration which is the 108th edition to held was themed: #BalanceforBetter  and it is aimed at encouraging people around the world to take action towards accelerating gender balance.

In a speech delivered at the occasion, the Provost of the College, Dr. Samuel Akintunde described the event as historic, noting that the celebration, which is the first to be held in the institution, provided opportunity for female staff of the college to gather together to discuss issue of common interest stating that the development would go a long way in cementing their relationship, boost unity and encourage peaceful coexistence.

He lauded members of ACEFSA and the Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies ( DGSDS) for organizing the event and expressed optimism that the step would help in adding values to the institution.

He said: "I am so glad that this event is taking place during my tenure as Provost of this bastion of knowledge. I feel so happy to see women come together because I know that when women unite, something big and positive is in the offing".

He reminded women of the vital role they play in the family and harped on the need for them to be up and doing saying " as parents, we should balance opportunities we offer our children in the provision of education, allocation of household chores, skill acquisition and vocational education.

In addition, the College Administrator emphasized the need for staff of the college to give equal opportunities to both male and female students in the discharge of their duties "without showing partial treatment to both genders".

Dr. Akintunde also urged members of ACEFSA to partner with College Management in the task of " checkmating social ills on campus and assisting in building a better College ".

He reiterated the commitment of his administration to promotion and sustenance of gender-friendly policy adding that the increase in the number of women holding leadership positions in the institution lends credence to it.

The Provost sought for continued support and cooperation and urged female staff of the college to seek constantly for self improvement while calling on the leadership of ACEFSA to engage in activities such as empowerment, offering of advice and mentoring of their members, saying the move would help in encouraging them to "strive for success in their places of work".

Earlier in her address of welcome, the President, ACEFSA, Mrs  Adebayo Olaoluwakiitan, described the association as " an encompassing forum geared towards the development of entire members of the family where both male and female exist".

She further posited that the body was established to assist all female staff of the college " to rise up to our responsibilities as career women, mothers, positive role models and nation builders ".

The ACEFSA President, however, lauded Management of the college for support given to the association since its establishment in 2018, adding that the development has assisted the body to grow " in strength numerically ".

Also in her address, the Head, Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies ( DGSDS) in the college, Dr. Martina Chinelo Onuegbu explained that  the  decision to join other women to celebrate  World Women's Day Celebration in the institution, was aimed at demonstrating commitment  to plight of women and to identify with them" in the struggle for emancipation and empowerment of women to combat societal ills and inequalities ".

On how gender- balanced world could be achieved, Onuegbu emphasized the need for all members of the family which include father, mother, youth and the child to work together harmoniously as one entity by playing role assigned effectively.

She equally charged women to show more interest in governance or attainment of leadership position  by grabbing opportunities available to them.

Her words: "Women should rise up to the task and grab opportunities available to them. They should contest for positions, showcase their knowledge and capabilities ".

In a lecture delivered on the occasion entitled ' "A written Will- A Necessity For # BalanceforBetter" by an Ibadan-based legal practitioner, Kehinde Adegbite, he emphasized the importance of Will writing noting what it entails, why, when, how and who could undertake it, has been largely responsible “for its misconception".

He said: "people always believe that writing a Will usually signifies bad omen and that it symbolizes a situation where one is beckoning on death, which is not true".

Speaking further on the topic, the legal luminary advised staff of the college to embrace Will writing saying the process which is in “no way limited to male folks" would benefit them in future.

Also in another lecture titled: " Work and Health: The Need to #BalanceforBetter", delivered by the College Director of Medical Services, Dr. Adekunle  Ogunmosin, he emphasized the need for women to pay attention to their health.

The medical practitioner also harped on the need for them to eat good food, engage in regular exercise and refrain from activities that could lead to stress which "may affect their efficiency and productivity".

The climax of the event which held at the Obongawan Grace Ekong lecture theatre was the donation of cash to two staff of the College who are widows by ACEFSA.

Eminent personalities who graced the occasion include the College Registrar, Mrs Olufisayo Fakorede; Bursar, Mr Ganiyu Abdul; Acting Librarian, Mr Akinade Awoyemi.

Also present were Deans and Directors: Heads of Departments and Units, Members of ACEFSA, staff and students among others.
