Students warned against cultism, drug addiction

Newly admitted students of Adeyemi College of Education Ondo, have been advised to shun cultism and drug addiction in the course of their academic pursuit in the institution.

The warning was given by the Provost of the College, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, in an address delivered at the 2018 / 2019 orientation programme organized  for freshmen on Tuesday March 19, 2019 in the College.

While congratulating the new entrants for their success in the Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination (JAMB),  Dr Akintunde stressed the need for them to be of good behaviour and to see their admission as opportunity to better their lots in future.

The College helmsman also advised the students to pay greater attention to their studies and admonished them to shun evil association, by refraining from activities that could lead to the premature termination of their studentship.

He advised them against engaging in cultism, examination malpractice and drug abuse warning that the College Management under his leadership would not hesitate to expel any student found contravening institution's rules and regulations.

He said: “My advice to you is to control yourself in this college and to face your studies seriously. Don't let anyone destroy your future, be very careful, here in Adeyemi College of Education, we have zero tolerance for cultism, if you are caught, you are going home and if you are caught in action, we will take you to Akure because we don't want cultists around here ".

Speaking further, the Provost also warned the students against indulging in drug addiction or any unlawful acts that could have negative effect on their academic career. He reiterated the commitment of his administration to development of the college and pray that God would grant them success in their academic pursuits.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Dean, Division of Student Affairs in the College, Mr Olaniyi Olaluwoye described the event as epoch making as it signifies " the beginning of their ( students) journey to greater and fulfilled height at Adeyemi College of Education Ondo".

Describing the College as" land of peace", Olaluwoye advised the students to make good use of the opportunity given to them by behaving responsibly and refraining from indulging in acts such as examination malpractice, drug addiction, prostitution and other social vices capable of disrupting their education.

He informed the new entrants about the ample opportunities available in the college that could helped them to achieve their life ambitions, and listed notable individuals such as former Registrar, JAMB, Prof Dibu Ojerinde;  Senator Oluremi Tinubu; immediate past Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen and incumbent Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, to mention but a few, who he said  were former students of the institution but rose to leadership positions in Nigeria.

While advising the students to emulate them, Olaluwoye said the orientation programme was organized to keep them informed  so that they would have better understanding of activities that take  place within and outside the College community.

The five-day orientation programme which began on Monday 18 will end on Friday March 22, 2019. It will feature presentations of lectures listed under  various topics which include " The College Community and You; Students and Financial Transactions in the College; You and the College Community I, II, III, IV as well as You and College Host Community I and II to mention but a few.
