Students of Adeyemi College of Education, now Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, have been advised to take active part in sports in order to enhance their mental and physical fitness.
This advice was given by the Provost of the institution, Dr. Samuel Akintunde while speaking at the grand finale of the year 2020/2021 Provost Cup competition which held on Wednesday, 9th February, 2022 at the College Sport ground.
The Chief Executive Officer commended the institution’s Director of Sports, Mr. Peter Olafoluso Ajewole for his leadership qualities and contributions to the development of sports in the College.
He equally lauded staff of the Directorate of Sports for their support as well as students of the College for orderly conduct and discipline exhibited during the period of the competition.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to the growth the College, Dr. Akintunde explained that the decision to pay attention to the needs of the institution in critical areas of road constructions, human capital development, building construction and sports development was geared towards adding value and leaving long-lasting legacies for subsequent administrations.
Also in his remarks, the institutions sports director expressed gratitude to the College management for providing an enabling environment that allowed sport to thrive in the institution.
He explained that the annual sporting competition, which began nearly 10 years ago, was geared towards talent discoveries, development of mental and physical fitness as well as promotion of healthy competition and social interactions among the students.
Ajewole lauded members of the board of institution’s Sports Committee for their co-operation and support, stating that it has helped in ensuring the success of the competition.
Meanwhile, a large number of students of the institution and sports lovers from within and outside Ondo community was in a joyous mood when they came to watch the final of the Provosts Cup for the Year 2020/2021, which was played on Wednesday, 9 February, 2022 at the College football field.
At the end of the 90-minute encounter which took place between students from School of Arts and Social Sciences and their counterparts from the School of Science, the latter defeated the former by 2 – 0.
Earlier in a 4x100m men relay race which held few minutes before the commencement of the football encounter, athletes from the School of Science also won the first position. They were followed by the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Languages which took second and third position respectfully.
Other games held during the annual sporting competition were table tennis, volleyball, basketball and handball.
The highpoint of the fiesta was the presentation of medals to participants who made outstanding performance during the competition by the College Provost.
The medals were given to the captain of female football team from the schools of Science, Language and Arts and Social Sciences for emerging first, second and third positions respectfully.
Similar honours were also given to their male counterparts from the schools of Science, Arts and Social Sciences and Languages.
The Colleges Chief Executive Officer also presented medals to the directors of sports of the Student Union Government, School of Science, School of Vocational and Technical Education, School of Arts and Social Sciences and School of Languages.
At the climax of the event, the football trophy was presented to the captain of the winning team, School of Science, by the institution’s director of sports.
Medals were also presented to most valuable player, best goalkeeper of the football game, best shooter as well as the referee and linesmen who officiated during the match.
