Comportment Is Key to Success, Progress, Interpersonal Relationship – Distinguished Linguist
A distinguished academic and linguist, who is the Dean of the School of Languages and Chairman, Committee of Deans at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Dr. Raphael Adesuyan has described comportment as a key factor to success, progress and a building block for interpersonal relationships with colleagues and students.
He made this statement during a one-day orientation programme organized by Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Adeyemi Chapter, organized for newly employed teaching staff of the College on Thursday, 25 March, 2021 at the New Center for Educational Technology (CET) in the institution.
He explained that comportment would go a long way in determining public perception of an individual, as he advised each of the new staff never to joke with it. “If the only thing you know how to do is to relate well, you will succeed in your academic career,” Adesuyan stressed.
Adesuyan, one of the resource person, emphasized that every genuine relationship would go through varying weathers and storms. “Master problem-solving in relationship. A relationship is not good because it doesn’t have problems but a relationship is good because it solves its problems.”
“Deserved honour and respect must be accorded to your senior and junior colleagues and be friendly with your students. Don’t appear arrogant to anyone,” Adesuyan concluded.
Speaking at the event, the College Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, represented by the College Librarian, Mr. Azino Akpokurerie described the orientation programme as a necessity in the teaching profession because every profession has its hazards. Teachers are not dealing with files but molding characters and imparting knowledge to learners.
He stated that “COEASU is available to guide the new staff, not to cover their excesses.” He added that the new staff should abide by the ethics of the job being the only way they can see the evening of the job.
The Provost further advised the staff to be mindful of dangerous circumstances like sexual harassment from students and urged them not to disappoint whoever they came in through because: “When the ships are down, they will deny you.”
Speaking on the “Code of Ethics of the College of Education Academic Staff Union, Adeyemi College of Education Chapter” the former Dean of School of Science, Dr. Folorunsho Balogun described ethics a tool of enhancing professionalism and pleaded with the new staff to abide by the rules and regulations of the College.
“Do not delegate your assignment to other people. It is against the ethics of the job,” Balogun said as he reminded them of their primary assignment which is purely academics. He added that members should also carry out other duties assigned to them even when the assignments are not academic-related duties. He pointed out that “this falls under community service.”
The former Council member advised participants to render efficient and cost-effective professional service at all times and should be dedicated and faithful in all professional undertakings by being punctual, thorough, conscientious and dependable.
“In handling a case, always ask yourself: If I am the one in this situation, how will I feel,” the former Dean, School of Science and Chairman of Committee of Deans and Directors concluded.
The Dean, School of General Education and Chairman, Teaching Practice Committee, Dr. Smart Olugbeko in his presentation on “Integrity in Evaluation (Continuous Assessment, T.P., Supervision, Examination Invigilation) noted that the College employs two major types of evaluation, formative and summative.
He stressed that all College regulations on examination ethics must be followed strictly and all members must be certified by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to be qualified to participate in the Teaching Practice Exercise.
The former COEASU chairman, however, admonished the new staff to wear integrity as their badge of honour. “Integrity of evaluation you give determines the essence of what you have taught,” he stated.
“Academic integrity is what can take you far in this profession. The more you abide by the principles of academic discipline, the better for you in the system,” the curriculum specialist concluded.
The COEASU chairman, Dr. Tope Oziegbe, in his remarks, appreciated the management for doing the needful by employing more staff to mitigate the huge workload thrust upon lecturers by the geometrical expansion of the student populace.
He stated that the orientation ceremony was in collaboration with the College Management to safeguard the new staff from avoidable pitfalls as a result of carelessness in dealing with other staff and students. He charged them to be more careful as they face various challenges and put all that have been said during the course of the orientation to practice.
The event was attended by dignitaries from the College: Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede, represented by Mr. Gabriel Adeyemi Awe; College Librarian, Mr. Azino Akpokurerie; Bursar, Mr. Ganiyu Abdul and Acting Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Oluseto Olatuyi.
Others were COEASU officials: Vice Chairman, Dr. R.F Olaniyan; Secretary, Mr. D.O Olaniyan; Assistant Secretary, Mr. Bosun Ajisafe; Auditor, Dr. Ogunyinka; Treasurer, Dr. Musili Odutuyi.
