The Provost, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, has charged newly matriculated students in the institution to discover themselves early and engage in hard work in order to pave way for having excellent results and entrepreneurial skills, saying it will be of future benefit to them as individuals and Nigeria as a nation.
I want to admonish you to be careful in choosing your friends so as not to be led astray by anyone. Discover yourself on time and engage in serious hard work for excellent results and entrepreneurial skill that would be beneficial to you and the country in future, he stated this at the two-day 2019/2020 matriculation in the institution on Tuesday and Wednesday, 24 and 25 November, 2020.
The Provost revealed that: Few days ago, the country is officially declared to have entered into the second recession within the last four years. Therefore, it is no longer news that our dear country is faced with different but related social and economic challenges that demand out-of-box reflections from both the young and the old.
“Hence, there is the need to adopt strategies to survive in morally acceptable ways. I leave you with the responsibility of thinking out appropriate ways to adapt to the new realities in Nigeria, he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede also joined the Provost to advise the newly admitted students of the College to be of good behaviour during their stay in the institution.
Prof. Ogunbodede gave the advice in an address delivered at the 2019/2020 matriculation ceremony, held for the Degree students on Wednesday 25 November, 2020 at the Babatunde Ipaye Lecture Theatre in the College, advising them to behave responsibly when in the College.
Represented by Prof. Bonke Adepeju Omotesho, Acting Dean, Faculty of Education, OAU, Ile-Ife, the university administrator described the occasion as significant “because it signalled formal enrollment of the students into the college of education academic programmes.”
The OAU VC described teaching profession as noble, adding that recent pronouncement by the Federal Government on plans to improve teachers’ welfare would serve as morale booster and strong indication of bright future for those who choose teaching profession as career.
He harped on the need for the students to behave responsibly while undergoing their studies as he advised them to shun act capable of dragging the good name of the College into the mud.
Prof. Ogunbodede used the occasion to commend management of the College for the feats recorded in recent years, especially the launch of a drone camera, stating that the achievement has brought glory to the institution as the first higher institution to have such equipment in Nigeria.
In his address, Dr. Akintunde congratulated the newly matriculated students on their admission to the institution, as he advised them to always be obedient to constituted authorities by adhering strictly to rules and regulations guiding their studentship in the College.
He reiterated the institution’s zero tolerance to examination malpractice, as he warned the students against indulging in social vices such as rape, drug abuse, cultism, assault as well as indecent dressing.
The College administrator emphasized the need for the students to comply with the information contained in the matriculation oath read by them, warning that anyone found contravening the oath would receive appropriate sanction.
While emphasizing the need for the new students to shun bad association, the Provost equally counselled them to take their studies seriously by ensuring that they register for their courses and pay all prescribed fees as and when due.
