Department of Social Studies
Department of Social Studies
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department came into existence during the 1992/93 academic session. At the inception, it operated as an integral part of Department of History. Furthermore, at this initial stage, the Department could not boast of its own personnel both academic and administrative staff. Thus, lecturers from other Departments in the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Part-time Lecturers undertook its courses.
However, by the 1993/94 academic session, the Department was privileged to have its own academic staff, which were four in number. The Department graduated its first set of NCE students at the end of the 1994/95 academic session. Over time the number of academic staff increased to eleven with five being Ph.D holders and the rest on post graduate programmes. Regular degree programme became operational in the Department during the 2012/2013 academic programme with students admitted for both degree I and Degree II simultaneously. The Department produced the first set of graduates in 2015/2016 Academic Session. To enhance academic work in the Department, it has three Adjunct Professors.
