Student Union: Don’t Betray Trust of Those Who Voted for You — Provost

The Provost of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Dr. Samuel Akintunde has advised new student union leaders not to betray the trust reposed in them by those who voted for them, warning them to exhibit transparency and accountability at all times.

Dr. Akintunde stated this during the inauguration of the newly-elected Student Union executive officers that would oversee the affairs of the body during the 2020/2021 academic session on Monday, 17 May, 2021 in the institution.

The 11-member students’ representatives included: Odunayo Gbenga (President), Ismail Zainab (Vice-President), Olorundare Anuoluwa (General Secretary) and Akingbohungbe Esther (Assistant General Secretary).

Others were: Adefarakan Aderemi (Director of Finance), Majeminu Busayo (Director of Transport), Babatola Damilare (Director of Social and Culture), Ayoola Azeez (Director of Welfare), Ojo-Fadehun Olaleye (Director of Sports), Eniola Oluwadare (Director of Information and Publicity) and Ojesanmi Taiwo (Treasurer).

In his remarks, the College Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde represented at the occasion by his Deputy, Dr. Gbade Ikuejube, described the event as epoch-making, as he commended the Student Electoral Commission (SECO) for conducting a hitch-free election devoid of rancour.

The Colleges chief executive officer also lauded the Dean of Student Affairs in the institution, Mr. Olukayode Ojo Akinola, for providing good leadership and ensuring smooth transition of power from the former Student Union executive to a new one.

The Provost also commended the Acting Director, Management Information System (MIS), Dr. Kehinde Emmanuel Adelegan and other supportive staff of the Directorate for bringing innovation into the electoral process.

He noted that the directorates strategy of using local resources and displaying technical expertise during the exercise was not only cost-saving but also a demonstration of the problem-solving capability of the institution.

Dr. Akintunde commended the outgoing student union officials under the leadership of Ayoola Olamilekan Joshua for exemplary behaviour and the achievements recorded during the tenure.

Congratulating the new student union officers, the College Provost enjoined them to emulate their predecessors by ensuring that they embrace dialogue instead of confrontation when dealing with management, staff and students.

He emphasized the importance of dialogue. He maintained that: “Nothing can be achieved in an atmosphere devoid of peace.”

The College helmsman used the occasion to disabuse the minds of students and members public on the rumour being peddled around about increase school fees.

He explained that the information, which had gone viral especially on the social media, did not represent the position of the College Management.

His words: “It is not true that we have increased school fees. They are still the old fee regime. So, if people tell you Adeyemi College has increased school fees, don’t believe the information.

The new fee being proposed is not from the College Management. It is the initiative of the students.”
Earlier, the Dean of Student Affairs expressed appreciation to College Management for providing the needed moral and financial support to the Division of Student Affairs.

Similarly, Mr. Akinola equally thanked the MIS for providing technical assistance, which facilitated the smooth conduct of the election.

According to him, the use of electronic device during elections in recent times served a very good purpose, as it assisted the College in “overcoming challenges that usually encountered in the past during the conduct of student union elections in the institution.”

The DSA, like the Provost, used the occasion to commend the outgoing student union executives for their leadership style and contributions to the development of the College.

He charged the incoming executive to emulate their predecessors by ensuring that they shun acts capable of bringing the good name of the institution into disrepute.

Also in his address, the newly-elected SU president expressed appreciation to students of the College for electing him as their leader.

He equally thanked management of the institution for creating an atmosphere conducive for enabling smooth conduct of the election and seamless transfer of power.

The new SUG president outlined his vision and mission for the College, focusing on developing Information Communication Technology (ICT), promoting students’ welfare, as well as sustenance of peace and tranquility in the institution.

He pledged to sustain the legacies of his predecessors and collaborate with authorities of the College in their resolve at taking the institution to a higher level.

Odunayo promised to provide selfless service and work as an instrument of revival in the College, as he appealed for support and cooperation from all stakeholders.

The highpoint of the well-attended ceremony, which held at the Babatunde Ipaye Lecture Theatre, was the admission of oath of allegiance on the Chief Justice of the judicial arm of the SUG by the College Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede.

Following that, the SU Chief Justice administered the oath of allegiance on the Senate President and Speaker of the legislative arm, SU President and members of the Central Executive Council.

The occasion was attended by principal officers of the College: Deputy Provost, Dr. Gbade Ikuejube; Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede; College Librarian, Mr. Azino Akpokurerie, who was represented by Mr. Michael Jatto; and Bursar, Mr. Ganiyu Abdul.

Also present were deans and directors, heads of directorates, departments and units, deputy registrars from various divisions, staff of the College from the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Centre for Educational Technology (CET) and Department of Music.

Similarly, the event was also attended by National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) officials and leadership of Students Union Government from some tertiary institutions in the South-western part of the Nigeria.
